Onzo, the global designer of domestic energy management systems, has been honoured with a coveted product design award from the internationally respected  ‘red dot’ organization for its flagship product, the Onzo Smart Energy Kit.

An international jury of design experts examine and test the products submitted for the annual red dot design awards, and assess them according to criteria such as degree of innovation, functionality, ergonomics, longevity, ecological compatibility and clarity of function.  This year a total of 3,231 products, from companies in 49 countries, were scrutinised.

Commenting on the achievement, Onzo Chief Executive Joel Hagan said, Winning a red dot award sends a clear signal to the global market that we have succeeded in meeting the design challenge of changing how people will interact with energy in the home, proving them with the understanding to allow them to lower consumption, expenditure and carbon output, and reduce the impact on the grid at peak times.

Some of the key features that helped Onzo to stand out include the handheld, portable display and the sensor.    The display can be located anywhere in the home, from the fridge to the coffee table, and receives data wirelessly from the sensor, which assesses the energy usage profile of the home.  The sensor fits easily to a cable running from the electricity meter using a unique clamp design, and harvests energy from the cable, thus ensuring that in normal circumstances there should be no need to recharge or replace the batteries.

The  display presents useful and actionable information, not just data. Onzo’s unique EnergyToolsTM help people to understand their home’s electricity use at a glance. Uploading data via USB from the display allows the supporting web service to translate it into graphical visualisations of electricity use that will inspire positive behaviour change.

Neil Tierney, Onzo’s R&D Director added, Increasingly, a product is defined not only by its physical appearance.  You have to combine technology and design talent with commercial mastery to develop innovative, market-leading solutions.

Presentation of the 2009 red dot awards will take place on 29th June in the Essen Opera House, the Aalto Theatre.

Ends.

Telegesis helps Onzo with its new energy management tools

London, 5th March 2009

Onzo, the global designer of domestic energy management systems, and ZigBee specialists Telegesis

(UK) Ltd used the recent ZigBee alliance Smart Energy Forum in Dublin, which took place on 13th February, to unveil the Onzo Smart Energy Kit ZigBee edition. This provides consumers with a clear, simple display of real time data, helping them understand and manage energy usage.

The ZigBee edition of the Onzo Smart Energy Kit is made up of a combination of a ZigBee home energy display, which integrates into the consumers’ or utilities’ home area network, and a software suite, which enables consumes to manage their energy use online through a web portal.

ZigBee is a key enabling technology for energy management products in the home. The ultra low power wireless networking standard offers secure, reliable, home area networks (HAN) and makes it easy to embed wireless communications into a wide variety of metering products. ZigBee enables devices to assemble into robust wireless mesh networks that configure and heal automatically and has emerged as the prime standard for wireless HAN and metering applications.

Onzo and Telegesis have been working closely over several months and in addition to hardware support, Telegesis also implemented the new ZigBee Smart Energy Application Profile for Onzo on the ETRX2 module.

The ZigBee Smart Energy Profile defines the standard behaviour of Home Area Network (HAN) devices such as home displays like the Onzo Smart Energy Kit, which are key components in the emerging area of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), enabling communication between utilities and HAN devices.

Commenting on the collaboration, Onzo CTO Ben Pirt said The Telegesis ETRX2 allowed us to get to market quickly and the addition of the Smart Energy Profile means that our product will be compatible with a wide variety of other smart energy devcies. Overall, we’re very happy with the performance and support from Telegesis.

Telegesis Sales Director Ollie Smith commented We’re delighted to be working with Onzo, who’ve clearly produced a cutting edge design. Telegesis focuses exclusively on ZigBee and I’m especially pleased that our skill in ZigBee Smart energy has helped Onzo develop such an innovative product.
