Onzo, the world’s leading expert in energy analytics, today responds in support of Chris Huhne’s drive for energy savings. In Mr Huhne’s speech at the Liberal Democrat conference on 20th September, he made a strong case for energy savings, claiming that consumers can ”offset the effects of higher prices and end up with lower bills”.  Onzo is at the forefront in helping to change consumer energy usage through education and better access to energy use information.

As Mr Huhne points out in his speech, educating customers about energy usage is a major barrier to energy saving.  He quotes figures from OFGEM, indicating that most users could save £200 per year by switching tariffs, yet less than one in seven do so.  On top of that, most consumers can make significant additional savings by changing the way they use energy, but to achieve that they need more information about their energy costs.

Onzo has been helping consumers understand their usage through the use of their award winning energy display, which SSE is supplying as part of its iPlan tariff.  This lets users see the impact of all of their electricity usage, as well as providing tools to help them change their behaviour.  Education and engagement is emphasised by providing customers with web access.  This allows them to see their detailed energy usage and compare this with similar customers, set consumption targets and see how their usage has changed. Over 50,000 customers are already using these displays.  An analysis of results indicates that these customers have managed to reduce their overall energy usage by an average of 8%, equating to a further saving of £110 on an average £1400 annual bill – a saving which they can maintain year on year.

“We welcome Chris Huhne raising this and pointing out that consumers have the ability to reduce their energy consumption,” said Joel Hagan, Onzo’s chief executive.  “We believe that consumers need to engage with their energy usage.  Our displays and data analytics have proven to be effective in educating customers, as proven by the 50,000 customers who are using them.”

Onzo will be demonstrating their ability to help utilities to educate consumers to save energy at the Metering Europe exhibition in Amsterdam from the 4th – 6th October, where they will also be sharing details of customer’s engagement with their solutions.
